A Word To The Discouraged
By Pastor Tony Butler
“He said to them, ‘I saw Satan fall like lightening from heaven.
Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions,
and over all the power of the enemy,
and nothing shall by any means hurt you.’”
“Therefore, submit yourselves to God,
Resist the devil,
And he will flee from you.”
One day Satan called a demonic conference to see how successful their evil tactics against Christians were working. It was discovered at the conference that one of the most effective attacks against Christians was discouragement. It was easy to implement, and most devastating.
One of the demons at the conference decided to try it. He approached a Christian and whispered, “You’re discouraged! Your prayers aren’t being answered; no one cares, why should you?” Looking around, the Christian blinked as the demonic suggestion raced through his mind. Thee Christian began to dwell on the suggestion as the demon shouted more words of discouragement. Soon, the Christian had a dark gloom hanging over him, and he began to question the worthwhileness of his service to God. At that point, he decided to tell his pastor he was going to end his involvement in church ministry, because it was not going like he thought it should. The demon, excited with hellish glee, couldn’t wait to report back to his superiors how triumphant he had been using discouragement.
Confident, he went out again, looking to use his new-found, powerful tactic against another Christian. Only this time, he came to a Christian who knew God’s word, and was filled with the Holy spirit. “You’re discouraged!” the demon yelled into the Christian’s mind. “Most Christians don’t care; why bother? What do you get for your troubles? Things aren’t going well. You are discouraged, and you need to quit.”
Suddenly, as the thought raced through the Christian’s mind, he said out loud, “I reject this thought; I am not discouraged. My Father is God, and all powerful! My Savior is with me. I will say of the Lord, ’He is my Refuge and my Strength, my Fortress, my God; in Him will I trust. I refuse to be discouraged, and I command in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ, that the lying spirit that brought that thought to my mind must depart from me and be cast into the abyss!”
The demon was in shock as he felt a powerful force pulling him downward toward the blackness of the fiery abyss. He could not believe his tactic didn’t work, and that this Christian took authority over him in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Now, in torment and complete isolation in the eternal blackness of hell, the demon moaned, “I am so discouraged. Nothing has turned out right. It’s all over; what was the use?”
Christian, when discouragement comes, please do two things. First, recognize where it comes from, and secondly, refuse it in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Take your stand as to who you are in Christ, and take authority over the evil one. Put your trust into the God of all comfort, Who will encourage your heart with Truth and His Spirit.
