Monkey People

Some years ago, I heard a missionary share how a particular tribe trapped a certain species of monkey.  These monkeys were very fast, and never strayed far from the safety of their large African trees.  The tribesmen loved the meat of these monkeys, and came up with an ingenious way to capture them.  Through observation, the natives saw that the monkeys were greedy and selfish, so they exploited the monkeys’ weaknesses.  This was done, by tying narrow-necked gourds to stakes just under the trees.  The stakes were driven deep into the ground, so the monkeys couldn’t pull them lose.  The tribesmen then put a piece of fruit into each gourd, and walked off to hide in the bushes.

Later, the monkeys came down out of the trees, and began to examine the gourds.  Discovering the fruit in them, they reached their hands through the skinny neck of the gourd to grab hold of the food.  However, there was a big problem for the monkeys.  They could get them past the narrow neck of the gourd with their hands open; but not with clenched hands full of fruit. How frustrated the monkeys were!  They wanted the goodies in the gourd so badly.

During the monkeys’ frustration, the tribesmen came out of the bushes, walked up to the monkeys, and grabbed them.  To escape their captors, all the monkeys had to do was open their hands, let go of the fruit, and slip their hands out.  Their unwillingness to let go of the fruit brought about their destruction.

As I heard this story, I thought how often people are like these little monkeys.  Satan offers them little pieces of the fruit of drugs, money, power, illicit sex, and all kinds of deceitful pleasures.  They put their hands into his gourds and won’t let go.  Satan comes for them from where he has been hiding, desiring to destroy them.  All any would have to do is to let go of the deceptive fruit, and run to the safety of Christ.  Satan can’t destroy anyone who is in Christ.  Millions of souls are forever burning in hell today, because they refused to let go of the very things that Satan was using to destroy them.

Are you like the monkeys?  If Jesus isn’t your personal Lord and Savior, you are like one of them.  One of Satan’s deceptions is keeping your hand on the gourd.  Let go, run to Jesus and be saved!  He is the only safety there is for you.

I John 2:15-17 – “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world.  If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.  For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the vain glory of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.  The world passes away, and the lust, thereof; but he who does the will of God abides forever.”

Mark 8:36-37 “What shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world and lose his own soul? What shall a man give in exchange for his soul?”
