Safe in God's Hands

By Lois Goodman

Psalm 91:11,12 "for He will give His angels charge concerning you, to guard you in all your ways. They will bear you up in their hands, lest you strike your foot against a stone."

This is one of my favorite parts of Psalm 91. And I truly believe it! In June of 1996 Byron and I were getting ready to go to Papua New Guinea with New Tribes Mission as Associate Missionaries.

One of the requirements was for us to attend a 10 day training session with the other "on-their-way-to-the-field" Associates to prepare us for living overseas. It was held three weeks before we were scheduled to leave out at one of the New Tribes training centers in Camdenton, Missouri . We learned much, but this story is about after the training on the way back to our son's house in Dayton, Ohio, to finish packing and getting ready to depart.

Our daughter-in-law, Beth, and her friend drove down from Dayton to pick us up. We were all very tired on the trip back. They had driven all day to come get us, and we had been very busy the whole 10 days with the training.

About 45 minutes into the drive home I realized I'd left my purse at the training center. We couldn't just have them ship it to us as we would be on a plane in less than three days. It had all my ID papers, including my passport, in it. So we had to go back and get the purse. This added one and a half hours to the trip. So back we went and got the purse.

Back on the road after retrieving my purse.................  We were about an hour from Dayton.....Beth and her friend were asleep in the back.......I was asleep in the front seat, and Byron was driving (it was close to midnight or after).

For the first and last time in his life Byron fell asleep at the wheel! We all woke up as the car started doing 360 degree circles (at least 3 or 4...seemed like more!) in the median! Then it came to a full stop! Right side up....it never even tried to flip! We were all wide awake and trying to figure out what happened. Byron turned the key and the car started right up. We drove out of the median to the next exit where there was a large gas station that was open.

We sat there talking and as we did a police car with sirens blaring and lights flashing was on the freeway heading down to where we had gone off the road. Someone had seen us go off into the median and had called 911 about an accident. But we weren't there. No one else was involved. Our car wasn't damaged. We were all awake!

Beth called our son to let him know what had happened and that we were OK. He related to her that he'd been awakened by a dream that was similar to the Book of Job! His dream: Satan didn't want us on the mission field. He wanted to "take us out". In the dream God said OK to try, but He got to choose where, when and how! Our son got out of bed, on his knees and started praying for us.

Here's the rest of the facts. We were between traffic (no other cars or semi trucks around us close enough to be involved); there were no overpasses close by for the car to run into; and the big one for me is that the car didn't flip over! We were going 60 mph down the freeway and went off the road, spinning around 3 or 4 times in the rough median! We are SURE God's angels were surrounding the car so that it couldn't flip!

We were obedient to God and spent from 1996 to November 2002 overseas with New Tribes Mission allowing God to use us. He is still using us for His work. He saved us that night for His purpose and we will never forget it!

Hebrews 1:14 claims "Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?" And I say a resounding YES!
