The Sacred Name Movement

WHAT IS THE SACRED NAME MOVEMENT?

Gary Mink

The sacred name movement is a religious movement which began in the late 1920s and early 1930s. It  grew out of division within the Church of God, Seventh Day.

While the most popular English form of the Name comes to us as Yahweh (Yahshua for Jesus), in Hebrew Bibles it is hwhy and in early Hebrew manuscripts and engravings, hwhy. By most scholars, it is represented in English as YHWH. By some YHVH.

For many sacred name people, a secondary concern is the disparagement, in varying degrees, of the name of Jesus. This disparagement extends to Chr_stians and Chr_stianity (sic) for refusing to use the Hebrew only sacred names and for being full of pagan practices.

Goals

1. To encourage, stimulate, and impel people to come out of the Sacred Name Movement

While it is our open and stated purpose to move as many people as possible to exit the Sacred Name Movement, we do so by persuasion not by coercion. No one is compelled to visit our web site. We physically constrain no one to read our essays. We are just happy that so many people choose to do so.

We believe the people in the Sacred Name Movement and everyone else have the moral right to believe anything they want to believe. In the U. S. A. and many other places they also have this as a political right. These are rights which we certainly do not want to see taken away.

We believe the moral right to choose between right and wrong, good and evil, and truth and error is God given. He allows us to have free choice.

The people who have accepted the so-called revelation of the sacred names have just made the wrong choice. They have chosen error instead of truth.

This choice is absolutely both their political and moral right. It is still heart breaking that they have thus chosen.

It is our purpose, therefore, to induce them to come out of this false way. We prevail upon them to remove themselves from a movement which is in a morass of mistrust and misapplication of the holy scriptures, misinformation and misconception of historical evidence, and because of these reached misguided and mistaken conclusions.

These errors have led the people so entangled into an improper worship toward God, an improper view of themselves, and improper actions toward others.

The Sacred Name Movement is just another daughter of mother Babylon. God is still calling his people to come out of her.

It will appear to anyone who takes time to read even a few of the essays published here, that this endeavor is a very personal matter. We have family, friends, and acquaintances who were subjected to a thorough and strong influence to accept the so-called revelation of the sacred names. They are still subjected to motivation-by-fear to remain loyal to their leader and this false doctrine. We know this because we were subjected to the same. [ Please read our personal story .] We praise Jesus every day for the fact that some of them have come out.

We cannot pursue this work hard enough, we cannot pray long enough, we cannot study and write well enough, we cannot be convincing enough to get these and others out of this horrendous error soon enough.

2. To expose to public view some of the egregious errors the Sacred Name Movement teaches and practices

It is our hope that if a person knows what the Sacred Name Movement teaches and practices, he or she will have no desire to become a part of it. This may be true of some, while not true of others.

Nevertheless, toward that end we labor. The least we can do is publish the information we have.

3. To incite discussion of the teachings of the Sacred Name Movement

When we use the word incite, it is the very word we mean. Our essays are written for no other reason than to produce points of discussion. If we can just get sacred name people talking, perhaps we will be able to convince them to come out. We know of no other way.

We are happy to personally discuss either by mail or phone the issues concerning the doctrine on the sacred names or other teachings of the Movement. We do this, if not on a daily basis, at least on a regular one.

The issue of whether I engage in debate comes up now and then. Yes, I have been involved in public and also written debates. Formal public discussion of biblical issues is good. It is certainly an excellent way to get the truth before an adversarial audience. Sometimes it is the only way to do so.

However, for such debate to be productive, it must be in formal setting and strict rules must be complied with. I expect to debate these issues.

TO GET ONE MORE PERSON OUT OF THE SACRED NAME ERROR

Through prayer, bible study, and at least some help from these web pages, we have seen people forsake the grievous errors propagated by the Sacred Name Movement. So far, not enough. Not nearly enough. May Jesus help us to reach one more!
