V. The Anointing Of Jesus

In the following verses we see our Lord’s own words concerning His earthly work.

Luk 4:18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.

After Jesus spoke these words he began to practice what he preached in the same chapter of Luke. (look at verses 21-41) He healed the sick, cast out demons, and preached to the people.

In the gospel of John we see Jesus declared He finished that work His Father gave Him to do.. This statement is made before He went to the cross.

Joh 17:4 I have glorified You upon the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do.

Healing people, casting out demons, and preaching God’s word are the three things that entail the entire work of Jesus on the earth apart from His work on the cross. Look at the following verses and think about the ministry of Jesus on the earth.

Joh 14:12 Truly, truly, I say to you, He who believes on Me, the works that I do he shall do also, and greater works than these he shall do, because I go to My Father.

Joh 20:21 Then Jesus said to them again, Peace to you. As My Father has sent Me, even so I send you.

When we look at the ministry of the disciples in Acts we see their participation in the same three things. I believe casting out demons was a regular work of the early church but it isn’t so today. People have given themselves to all kinds of sin today and have dabbled in supernatural things through religion, drug usage, sexual uncleanness, witchcraft, and sorcery.

Jesus sent out his disciples to solely Jewish people in Luke chapter ten. They came back from ministering to the covenant people of God and declared how they cast demons out of people (Jews –covenant people). Jesus sent them out to do what he did; to preach, heal the sick, and cast out demons. John 20:21 is for the church today. Our ministry should entail the work of Jesus on the earth. We as well have been anointed by the Holy Spirit to lay hands on the sick, cast out demons, and preach the gospel.
